How to Promote Your Music

September 10, 2018  By Enver Hoxha

Promoting music as an independent artist has never been easier. Technology has opened countless new ways to promote your music to your fans, making it possible to instantly connect with people from across the globe.

Plus, some of the old-fashioned promotion techniques are still effective today, so there should be nothing hold you back when it comes time to promote your latest music. Here are some of the most effective ways to promote your music:

Play Gigs

Even though digital promotion is unquestionably a powerful tool for musicians, sometimes they place too much focus on this and forget about the most effective promotional tool for any musician – playing their music in front of a live audience!

Gigs remain a very efficient way to promote your music. There is a personal interaction at gigs that cannot be re-created digitally, which is why so many people love going to a live show. So, don’t forget to regularly play at live music venues and promote your music, even considering travelling to different towns and cities to help extend your market.

Whether playing a new song exclusively for a live audience or performing for a long stretch to help promote a new album, get our there and start playing your music. You’ll build a stronger bond with current fans and likely find a few more at the same time, both of which help sell your material.

Use Social Media

Any musician not using social media is only limiting their promotional tools. Social media is an incredibly powerful marketing tool and something that musicians can use to great effect. However, it’s important to find the right balance of effective marketing and engaging your followers.

For instance, you don’t want your only posts to be promoting your music, there should be engagement with fans, funny posts, giveaways etc. This all helps to naturally promote you and your music, helping to develop word-of-mouth marketing.

So, rather than simply talking about your new single or album, give fans and followers updates about your tours, what you’re doing that day, post photos and videos, and anything else that increases engagement.

Develop Your Own Website

There are fewer more effective marketing tools for musicians than their own website. It’s important to have a robust online presence, and a professional-looking, highly responsive website is a great way to establish this.

With a good website that is constantly updated, you encourage fans to frequent it and check out all your new material, whether it’s an upcoming album, single, gig, or merchandise. Mailing lists are also good for promoting material, as you can send out email blasts regarding latest news, releases, and general updates.

Get Your Music Out There

Releasing music has never been easier thanks to streaming platforms. Spotify and iTunes offer an unrivalled reach for your music, with a global reach of millions, so consider trying to get your music distributed on these platforms.

Better still, there are digital distribution platforms like OneWayDistrothat help distribute your music to a much wider audience. For a modest fee, they’ll do all the hard work required to get your music on iTunes, Spotify and other platforms, helping to promote your music to the widest possible audience.
